But then again, little about Fluffy's story was conventional.

In 1991, Mike Knott wanted to release ten albums in a single month for his Blonde Vinyl label, but he was one band short. Engineer Chris Colbert, already recording several of the other releases, saw an opportunity to have some fun and offered to be the tenth band. He assembled a few friends and Fluffy was born.

Within a week, Fluffy had written and recorded Fluffy Luvs You, a straightforward punk rock album paying homage to the band’s bassist Jeff Beans. Beans was a founding member of The Detours, which later morphed into the legendary punk act The Adolescents. Fluffy played a few shows, most notably opening for The Crucified at an Orange County church while tripping on shrooms. A year later, Blonde Vinyl asked for a follow-up and the band regrouped, quickly writing and recording a Melvins-tinged post-punk album titled Go, Fluffy, Go! A few shows later and the band’s members moved onto other things.

In 1995, Chris Colbert moved from Southern California to Nashville. He paid the bills by engineering numerous albums at Neverland Studios, including notable releases from The Choir and Morella’s Forest. In Nashville, Colbert met Alex Parker through mutual friend Daren “Klank” Diolosa. Parker needed a roommate and Colbert needed a room. Parker, a former employee of R.E.X. Music, had recently started indie label Flying Tart. He had been a fan of Fluffy and offered Colbert $5000 in exchange for a new Fluffy record. Never one to turn down a paycheck, Colbert agreed.

With the rest of Fluffy back in California, the process of making Sugar Pistol would have to be very different. The album essentially took shape as two different bands performing as Fluffy, Colbert being the only person to perform on all of the tracks. The noisier post-punk numbers (e.g. “Shrimpy Brine” and “Dead Horse Grin”) were written and recorded by the original band at The Green Room in Huntington Beach. The remaining tracks were recorded in Nashville during improv studio sessions with Steve Hindalong (The Choir) and feature contributions from Jason Martin (Starflyer 59), Ronnie Martin (Joy Electric) and Riki Michele (Adam Again). The Nashville tracks sounded markedly different, flirting with elements of dream pop and space rock.

This hodgepodge somehow worked, resulting in what was by far the most diverse-sounding and experimental Fluffy album. Flying Tart released Sugar Pistol in late 1995, but had trouble getting record stores to carry the CD, many of whom balked at the innuendo-laden album title and imagery. Around the same time, UK rock band Fluffy were preparing to make their major label debut and offered Colbert a cash payment if he agreed to stop using the name Fluffy. Still not one to turn down a paycheck, Colbert happily agreed and the album was pulled.

Colbert decided to rename the band Duraluxe, a reference to the shoddy acrylic paint from Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Bluebeard. The album, now called Rock Music W/ Singing, was eventually re-released by Flying Tart in 1997. With all the confusion surrounding the re-release and name change, the album only managed modest sales. Colbert added to the chaos by starting a brand-new, completely unrelated band in Nashville also named Duraluxe.

The fact that Sugar Pistol reached such a small audience is really a shame; the songs are among the strongest in the Fluffy catalog. The California iteration was Fluffy at its post-punk peak — songs like “Shrimpy Brine,'' with its layers of screeching guitars over a hypnotic Jeff Beans bass line, were a refinement of style. In Nashville, meanwhile, the musicians experimented wildly in the studio. It was during this time that Sam Ashworth and Matt Slocum first met, with Sam contributing a song to Sixpence None the Richer’s self-titled 1998 album. They became fast friends and began meeting at Matt’s house regularly to jam and write music.

When Lindsay Jamieson moved to Nashville from London a few years later, he was introduced to his future bandmates at a party. A huge fan of The Sundays, Matt was fascinated to learn that Lindsay had played percussion on their albums. Not long after, Sam and Lindsay discussed the idea of starting a band. Sam recalls, “Lindsay came over to hang out and talk music. I had filled up a little kiddie pool on the side of my house and we sat in the kiddie pool in our trunks, drank beer and started conceptualizing a band.” During the conversation, it became clear that Matt would be an essential part of this band, so they approached him, and he was interested.

The band started playing shows at local Nashville venues, including Slow Bar, The Basement, Exit-In and Uptown Mix. They attracted many fellow musicians to these early shows, including Ben Folds, Fleming & John, and future member John Davis. According to Sam, Ben Folds was impressed: “Ben came to one of our first shows … and soon after hired Lindsay and Jared Reynolds [who played bass with the band at this show] to record with him.”

While continuing to perform, the band started recording during sessions at Matt’s house, the main floor of which was a sprawling studio. Prominent local engineers and producers Taylor Harris (Charlie Peacock) and Jacquire King (Kings of Leon) assisted with these sessions. At the same time, Lindsay was making frequent visits to RCA Studio A to track drums for Ben Folds’s album Songs for Silverman.

It was also around this time that John Davis first jammed with the band. The band members were fans of Superdrag and excited at the opportunity. John remembers, “It was more, ‘Come by the studio and just jam on something.’ If I had showed up and played something terrible, they probably wouldn’t have invited me to come up on stage with them. But as it turns out, we got some really cool stuff.” John was soon an official member.

As the band continued playing shows in Nashville, buzz spread around the industry, and the band drew interest from V2 Records. “I remember being in the studio and hearing somebody from V2 was interested,” Lindsay muses, “and it being a little drop of poison in the brain. You’re trying to just make music without an agenda, and suddenly in the back of your brain . . . you go ‘I wonder if Mr. V2 would like it this way or that way.’”

In the end, though, it wasn’t meant to be. Ben Folds’s Songs for Silverman was released to critical acclaim and Lindsay departed for a tour across the US and Europe. “It was just a gig that [Lindsay] needed to do,” as Sam remembers. “It made sense, we all understood, but it quickly became evident that continuing wasn’t going to be feasible at this point in time.”

The band, who had been slowly tracking songs at Matt’s house, wanted to put a release together to mark their time as a band. Sam explains, “We had completed about five or six songs and it was like, ‘OK, what can we release with what we have,’ and we narrowed it down to four.” The EP was self-released and sold through direct mail order and at their few remaining shows, including their final show opening for Silversun Pickups at Exit/In.

The EP displayed a staggeringly diverse sound for its short runtime. As John recently remarked, “I listened to the jams when we first started talking about [the reissue], for the first time in a long time and they were still just brand new.” Sam agrees: “Listening back to these songs recently, I really am just amazed at how it still sounds fresh. I can’t say that about a whole lot of music that I’ve made in the last twenty years. It just feels like this could come out right now as a brand-new thing and feel so appropriate for the times.”

Lost in Ohio is reissuing the 2012 indie pop classic, on limited edition pink & blue splatter vinyl. The build-up, in my head, in the late summer of 2012, this follow-up to what had already been a head-spinning debut, coming from this charismatically scrappy, poetically plainspoken power trio with uncanny pop sensibilities, coming out of Ypsilanti with made-to-order minimalist indie-ballads that rarely exceeded 150 seconds and only needed a piano, a guitar, a drum kit and the most beguiling melodies ever to grace the seedy innards of a dive bar. But you never get weighed down by all the utterly poignant heartache because the propulsive drums, with dynamics down to a tee, switch superbly between soft brushes to eruptive stampedes, all while perfectly complimenting the pound of the piano; our accompanying guitar, meanwhile, bends its way into melodic phrases that are so bewitchingly catchy that you don’t know whether to grin or cry.

And before you know it, the song, any song, is over. It’s fine to have a pity party, but this album limits them to two-minutes, and even then, it’s a pity party that always… ALWAYS feel uplifting by the end of the song. Because Blonde Album is a result of everyone involved, even if it was primarily just three people, and even predominantly one, making the exact choices they did in that moment, in that exact moment of being an indie-band with an albeit modest amount of “buzz” that was declared to be “on the cusp” of…whatever…, that exact moment of being being smack-dab in the middle of your 20s when your innocence has evaporated but your daring hasn’t been drained, and you are ready to stop questioning yourself and speak your heart instead of speak your mind…To reside right there, in that moment, in front of a piano? And then there’s the grounding that comes from another 25 years of life lived; Chris’s lyrics shift lenses from self-absorption and unrequited love and focus in on living a happily mundane life in this stilted world we inhabit together — all without sacrificing the widescreen emotion the band is known for.

"Songs stand out as clearly futuristic, perhaps paving the way for a new interaction of genres that hadn't previously been conceived."
– Pitchfork

100 Essential Dream Pop Releases
– Post-punk.com

"A pop-electronic fusion with a gentle jungle undertow. Not to mention a “monster drummer.”

What John got from that call was a twofer—Henry agreed to engineer, and Stewart signed up to produce. The father-son combo also quickly slotted in as John’s rhythm section. Suddenly – and, yes, heroically – there was a brand-new John Davis band.

They took their cues from three-piece legends like the Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Hüsker Dü and Dinosaur Jr (all, not incidentally, SST Records stalwarts) and used the spartan, no frills rock sensibility of the Ramones as inspiration. But they weren’t looking to go punk on John’s songs as much as go lean. “We weren't gonna be bound by any of the earlier arrangements or earlier decisions about the songs and what we wanted to do was eliminate all the fat.”

The first thing you notice on the record, in fact the very first thing you hear, is John’s thick, raw guitar tone. (And its short, warm sustain at the end of “I’m Sorry” is the very last sound.) Not unfamiliar or unaffiliated with the big production energy of Nashville where a band might employ more than 20 guitars to make a record, John and Stewart pinned almost all their sonic hopes on one Fender Stratocaster. “As ubiquitous as the Strat is, I feel like they’re really undervalued on records.” The decision was less about championing the Strat and all about creating a sonic universe the listener could take instant residence in. Once you key into the sound, it feels like home.

It also felt as honest as the lyrics. “I've been writing songs for a long time and my process has never really changed. I just try to open my heart up and whatever's in there, that's what you get.” And what you get on JINX is indeed that—a man carrying out assorted boxes from the dark and light sides of his heart. John takes listeners through the internal monologues of a person battling with depression and then buoys us back up with sweet and straightforward declarations of love.

The album opens with the lyrics “sometimes I’m a bag of broken glass / what am I supposed to do with that?” from “The Future” and then, on a dime, the newly engaged Davis invites us to his upcoming betrothal on “Please Be My Love” (“she’s so kind and sweet to me / that’s all she has to be”). The album intentionally conflates negative and positive connotations, which manifests in its titular identity. As a word, “Jinx” usually immediately conjures thoughts of bad luck, and that’s the idea to be certain. But the title is really just an inside joke between John and his fiancée about their almost daily tendency to utter the same phrase at the same time.

Yep, misfortune and soul connection, depression and new love.
