By 1996, Morella’s Forest was a different band than the one that recorded their fuzz-drenched debut, Super Deluxe, the year prior. After touring with Starflyer 59 and playing summer festivals across the country, the band returned home to Dayton sharper, tighter, and more sure of themselves than ever.

The result was Ultraphonic Hiss — a refined and radiant follow-up that swapped walls of shoegaze feedback for a dreamier, cleaner indie pop palette. Gone were the lo-fi bursts of noise. In their place: chiming guitars, playful melodies, and candy-coated tones wrapped around Sydney Rentz’s unmistakably lilting vocals.

The band traveled to Chicago’s Playground Studio to work with Keith Cleversley, whose production credits include The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and HUM. His influence is felt across the record, pushing the band toward a lush, spacey sound without sacrificing their emotional bite.

With candy-themed song titles and shimmering textures, Ultraphonic Hiss found immediate favor in the college and alt-press scenes, with College Music Journal calling the album "Awfully hard to resist," and Dayton Voice calling out its "Syrupy smooth voice and candy shop dreams."

Lost in Ohio has worked closely with members of the band to ensure this reissue matches the care and intention of the original release, with several notable upgrades:

  • Fresh analog remaster by longtime MF friend and engineer Christopher Colbert
  • Original cover art by Juan Monasterio (Brainiac, MONOstereo) thoughtfully adapted for vinyl
  • Lacquers cut by Lex van Coeverden at The Vinyl Room, Netherlands
  • Pressed on Pastel  Blue vinyl and limited to 350 copies

Whether you've been spinning Ultraphonic Hiss since the '90s or you're discovering its sparkly hooks for the first time, this vinyl edition is the definitive way to experience one of Dayton's most iconic indie pop records.
