John Davis has been an indie-rock institution since the mid-'90s, best known as the frontman of Superdrag, the band that briefly stormed MTV and alternative radio with 1996’s “Sucked Out.” But while the industry machine had other plans, Davis never stopped making music. From Superdrag’s major-label highs to its independent reinvention, from his raw solo work to the shoegaze-leaning Lees of Memory, Davis has remained relentlessly prolific, always chasing the next song.
His latest solo album, Jinx, started as a Superdrag record before a falling-out with its producer led him to scrap those sessions entirely. With Stewart and Henry Pack forming a new rhythm section, Davis stripped the songs to their essence, drawing inspiration from SST-era power trios like Hüsker Dü and Dinosaur Jr. The result is a lean, emotional album balancing blistering riffs with his signature melodic craft—oscillating between the depths of depression and the highs of new love.
While Superdrag remains intermittently active, Davis’ approach hasn’t changed: keep writing, keep recording, and let the music speak for itself.
