Lightning Love
Ypsilanti, MI
Lightning Love is an indie pop trio from Ypsilanti, Michigan, known for their bright, keyboard-driven melodies and sharply introspective lyrics. Siblings Leah and Aaron Diehl, along with guitarist Ben Collins, craft hook-laden songs that balance self-deprecating humor with raw emotional depth.
Their 2009 debut, November Birthday, became an underground favorite, praised for its stark honesty and infectious energy. AllMusic called it “bright, enthusiastic indie pop coupled with dour, neurotic lyrics that swung from ironically witty to borderline cry-for-help territory.” The band followed up with Blonde Album in 2012, a sonically rich collection that gained national attention from NPR, Paste, Vice, and Under the Radar while solidifying their status as a Michigan indie favorite.
Lightning Love toured with Walk the Moon and The Von Bondies, appeared on Adult Swim, and reached the finals in Billboard’s Battle of the Bands before going on hiatus. Their music remains a cult favorite, celebrated for its blend of vulnerability, wit, and irresistible pop sensibilities.
Both November Birthday and Blonde Album were reissued on vinyl by Lost in Ohio, both with fresh remasters and bonus tracks, including songs from the Girls Who Look Like Me EP. These releases reaffirm Lightning Love’s place as a vital voice in indie pop—continuing to resonate with new and longtime listeners alike.
