Velour 100

Ypsilanti, MI

Velour 100 was a dream pop and ethereal rock band from Ypsilanti, Michigan, active from 1995 to 2000. Masterminded by multi-instrumentalist Trey Many — also of His Name Is Alive and Liquorice — and produced with help from Warren Defever, the band carved out a distinctly 4AD-influenced sound that drew inevitable comparisons to Cocteau Twins, Low, and Slowdive. What made them especially distinctive was their rotating cast of vocalists across a small but cohesive catalog, including Tess Wiley of Sixpence None the Richer, Sydney Rentz of Morella's Forest, and Karin Oliver of His Name Is Alive — each lending a different shade to the band's gauzy, melancholic atmosphere. Despite their brevity, they remain one of the more quietly compelling artifacts of the mid-to-late '90s dream pop underground, and one that rewards rediscovery.
