Morella's Forest

Dayton, OH

Hailing from Dayton, Ohio, Morella’s Forest blended dream-pop sweetness with walls of swirling guitar noise. Formed in 1992 by Sydney Rentz (vocals), Shawn Johnson (guitar), Sean McCorkle (bass), and Nate McCorkle (drums), the band fused shoegaze textures with infectious indie-pop hooks.

Their 1995 debut, Super Deluxe, produced by Chris Colbert and Steve Hindalong, delivered fuzzed-out noise and airy, hypnotic melodies, drawing comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, The Breeders, and labelmates Starflyer 59. Follow-up albums Ultraphonic Hiss (1996) and From Dayton With Love (1998) refined their sound, incorporating pop-forward melodies and electronic flourishes. Their final album, Tiny Lights of Heaven (2002), embraced an even brighter indie-pop aesthetic.

Though Morella’s Forest never achieved mainstream fame, their music remains a cult favorite among shoegaze and dream-pop fans. With recent vinyl reissues of Super Deluxe and Ultraphonic Hiss, a new generation is discovering the band’s swirling, celestial soundscapes.
